Civil Society

Shrinking Spaces - Participation & Democracy - Transparency

Civil society is an important component of democracy. People come together to stand up for their goals or to help where the state does not act enough. In addition, civil society informs the public and politicians about social problems and thus contributes to raising awareness. UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The value of civil society

Starting with the anti-nuclear movement of the 1970s, through the defense of floodplain forests against the construction of the Danube power plant in Hainburg and the genetic engineering referendum with more than 1.2 million signatories, to the young people demonstrating for effective climate protection with #FridaysforFuture: The Austrian environmental movement has always been one of the driving forces of this civil society and has always been committed to civil liberties, democracy and the rule of law.

Accordingly, ÖKOBÜRO has received the mandate from its member organisations to work for special rights of the environmental movement as well as for the protection of civil rights in general in order to ensure the free development of civil society.

To this end, we network with organisations beyond the environmental sector. As member of Bündnis für Gemeinnützigkeit (Alliance for Non-Profit Status), we work together with other umbrella organizations representing more than 1,000 Austrian non-profit organizations. We also support the Austrian Civil Society Initiative and the Austrian Civil Society Solidarity Pact.

Our commitment to civil society focuses on three areas:

  1. We oppose shrinking spaces for the development and work of civil society. We stand for freedom of expression and freedom of the press, the right of assembly and independent courts.
  2. We advocate participation of civil society in legislation, as part of a vibrant and high-quality democracy.
  3. We advocate transparency in politics and administration, as an important control instrument for the public.
